Are you waiting for the school bus yet? Getting ready for school can be an exciting time for kids. They want new clothes, supplies, a new hair cut, and a bright smile. How do we prepare?
Make a list of what you need to do.
Schedule medical and dental check ups . Ask your doctor if your child is updated on immunizations too.
Create a budget for clothing and supplies. Your Sunday paper may have ads to let you know which stores are having sales on items. Let your child look at the ads and initial or circle what items they like. This gives you and idea of what they want and what you can afford. This also makes your child happy to feel involved in decision making. Let your child know they may not get all the items but you will try to find some. You might even find some items cheaper at another store too.
Your school will provide a list of the supplies required for your child by grade. You can either pick one up at school, or the stores may have a list provided from your school as well.
Having your child get a hair cut can be fun too! Let them look at a magazine to get an idea of what they want. If you disagree, ask the stylist. Your child is going to be happy no matter what in most cases!
Snacks for school. Again your child can circle ideas in ads for you to choose from. Always try to encourage healthy snacks as well. Fruit is usually a winner!
When you are finished shopping have a permanent marker handy. As you sort items out of the bags, you can label them with your child's name and information.
You have completed your list! Relax and wait for the school bus to arrive. Your child will be ready and prepared!! I love watching my children walk to the bus and turn around with that big cheesy grin on their faces!! They wave to you, you wave back and feel so happy to see your child head off to another great year of school ahead!

I am so relieved to be past all of this. I do however, wish that I could turn the hands of time back to when he was my little boy!
~wish wish wish~
When my eldest started pre primary (5yr olds) we received a note home that listed what could be put in lunches and what they could have as snacks. With the list of can nots we have very little choice as to what to put in our childrens lunchbox. I started making healthy snacks and now I have mums asking for the recipes.
School rules have sure gotten harsh since I was at school!
That's great Shari! They are not as strict here yet, but it is encouraged. I wish they would ..My kids actually favor healthy stuff. I'm lucky. (I'm the junk food eater in the house) lol
